The LAP-BAND® is a Gastric Bands for weight loss surgery. The gastric-band is inserted laparoscopically using tiny skin incisions. It’s wrapped around the top part of the stomach and secured in place with stitches, essentially creating a small stomach pouch above the band and a larger stomach below it. The band limits the amount of food you can eat, causing fullness after a small portion, thereby causing weight loss. There is also a port attached to the band, which is placed under the skin on the abdomen. This port is about the size of 5 quarters glued together. The port has a rubber seal on it and is used by the surgeon to inject small amounts of saline into the band. These band fills are done in the office in less than a minute. As saline is added, the band feels tighter and allows the patient to fill full with lesser amount of food. Most people need about 4-5 fills the first year to achieve adequate tightness.
Although the band is removable, it’s not really made to be placed temporarily. If removed, the stomach goes back to its normal size and it takes a lot more food to feel full. If the band is removed, most patients regain a large amount of their weight.
